On Sunday, the 7th September 2014 the 7th Annual “Into the Light” Suicide Remembrance and Awareness Walk will be taking place in Durban.

People will congregate at Durban View Park, Marine Drive Umhlanga from 8:30am and the walk usually ends by 10.30 am. This is a short walk along the beautiful promenade (paved and wheelchair accessible) to the Lighthouse where the release of balloons (with messages to their loved ones) are released in remembrance of loved ones lost to suicide.

All community members are encouraged to walk with us to help create awareness for this important cause.

People will be walking all over the world to create awareness about the importance of Suicide Prevention as well as in solidarity and hope to those who have lost loved ones in this way! It is amazing what strength the “survivors”, whose lives have been affected by suicide, have when they come together and support each other at this event.South Africa’s suicide rate is extremely high and needs to be addressed. There are more suicides in South Africa each year than in the US and UK.

SOLOS (Survivors of Loved Ones Suicide)

This walk is organized by SOLOS (Survivors of Loved Ones Suicide) a Support Group which is run as an extension of the Durban North Umhlanga Crisis Team with the support of SADAG.
The journey of a suicide survivor after the loss of a significant loved one can be excruciatingly painful, devastating and traumatic. The impact of suicide has a ripple effect. All who have had a relationship with the deceased will feel a sense of loss, be it the significant partner, parent, siblings, grandparents or friends.

The coming together of those bereaved by suicide can provide the opportunity to be with other people who can really understand, because they have been through the same experience and gain strength and understanding from the individuals along the walk or from the group. Everyone is welcome to join and create awareness.
