An interesting history to mention is that of Inanda just outside Durban. Inanda was home to three key figures in South African and World history. It was home to
– Dr. John Langalibalele Dube, the first president of the ANC, and founder of the Ohlanga Institute.
Mohandas (Mahatma) Karamchand, founder of the Natal Indian Congress and father of India’s independence, set up his first experiment in communal living inspired by Tolstoy – in Inanda, it was called the Phoenix settlement
Lastly Isaiah Mdliwamafa Shembe the founder of the largest independent African church also comes from Inanda.
All three of these key figures were contemporaries and interestingly enough lived within a few kilometers of each other.
