Bomb Scare at Gateway Mall!!
Social Media platforms have been buzzing for the past two hours about the news of a suspected bomb scare at Gateway Shopping Centre.
I Love Durban has been trying to establish whether this was true or not and Captain Thulani Zwane from the SAPS confirmed that there was a threat of a bomb threat.
The Bomb Threat was confirmed by The Gateway Facebook Page Post at 18h30:
“Please note we received a bomb threat earlier this evening. All required procedures are being followed. We have evacuated the centre while the bomb squad sweeps the mall to ensure all is alright. Centre Management regrets the inconvenience to shoppers and retailers and appreciate your cooperation in responding to the evacuation request. We will keep you updated.”
Captain Zwane confirmed that the canine and bomb teams were sent to the mall. However, no suspicious parcels were found. The bomb scare was reported to the Durban North Police Station this afternoon.
Many of the patrons who were there had to be evacuated so that the Bomb Unit could do a proper search.
It was imperative that Gateway be evacuated immediately. Captain Zwane confirmed that they cannot rule out it being a hoax until a proper search is done.
“We have to take it seriously and sweep the entire area”, he said. “If members see any suspicious parcels, vehicles or people report it immediately to our toll free crimestop number 08600 10111.”
However The Gateway Facebook Page then posted the following at 21h05:
Please note that the bomb squad has given us the all clear to re-open the centre. Thank you to everyone for their cooperation during this process, we do appreciate your support.
Gateway Management reacted very well and patrons were very cooperative, even though many were frustrated!
