Durban Now Only Bidder for The 2022 Commonwealth Games!!

Our amazing city of Durban is making headlines and trending worldwide after Canadian city Edmonton withdrew its bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, leaving Durban as the only remaining bidder.

David Grevemberg, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said:

“We’re obviously disappointed to hear Edmonton will not be part of the host city bidding process for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“We now look forward enthusiastically to working with the Durban 2022 bid team and their partners through the evaluation process so we can realise the ambitions of delivering Africa’s first Commonwealth Games.

“I’m confident there will be a great 2022 Commonwealth Games to follow on from the fantastic experience of Glasgow and the dynamic Games currently shaping up in the Gold Coast for 2018.”

Many have already taken to social media to now drive the Commonwealth Games to Durban and make history in bringing the Games to Africa for the first time. Even Wikipedia has updated to Durban being the only bidder, and it is quite amazing to see the South African flag on the list of host cities.

“We have noted Edmonton’s decision to withdraw from the bid process to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022. As the Bid Committee for the City of Durban, we are required to follow due process and lodge our bid with the Commonwealth Games Federation,” said chief executive of the South African Confederation and Olympic Committee Tubby Reddy in a statement on Wednesday hours after Edmonton’s official withdrawal.

A statement from the Edmonton’s bid team said financial reasons and a global fall in oil prices were behind the withdrawal.

The Games, which were held in Glasgow last year, were staged in Edmonton in 1978 and the city has said they will bid again to host the 2026 event.
This makes our beautiful city of Durban the only bidding city in the running so far. Other hopeful cities wanting to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022, have until the 02 March to do so.

The host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games will be selected September 2, 2015. Durban, it is our time to shine!!
