The Famous Curries Fountain in the heart of Durban’s CBD has a phenomenal story to it.
The year is 1878 and a terrible drought hits Durban. This causes a severe shortage of water. This prompts Councillor H.W. Currie to sink an artesian well in search of water in the area below the Durban Botanic Gardens.
The attempt strikes water and the well, named Currie’s Fountain, delivers 50,000 gallons of water to the town every day, through pipes which are laid for the purpose.
