Great News For Durban Businesses As City Domains For Websites Become Available In South Africa
Businesses can now register their company online with their city domain rather than .co.za. The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) announced on Tuesday, 4 November 2014, that the new ZADotCities domains (.capetown, .joburg, and .durban) had become available to the general public.
This of course is a lot more effective for companies that are based in local cities. With the launch of the ZADotCities general availability phase, these new TLDs (Top Level Domains) are now available on a first-come, first-served basis to anyone in the world who wants such a domain name.
Since the launch, people have been snatching up domains for their businesses quickly. Already .capetown has 623 applications, with 297 for .joburg and 250 for .durban. The reason behind .capetown surging number is a result of one person applying, for a what the ZACR reports to be, 237 domains.
South Africa’s four major banks have applied for a city domain name. And that there are 32 auctions pending for domains that have more than one applicant. According to ZACR most of South Africa’s technology brands have applied for all three city domain names.
How To Apply
For many looking to apply for their business domain, the application process is the same as applying for any website address. Applicants are required to follow the usual process where applicants register names through their chosen accredited registrars or resellers, the ZACR said in a statement. The ZACR also operates the .co.za, .web.za, .org.za, .net.za domains.
Carver Media, Durban based web development agency is one of the accredited registrars. Owner, Avilash Aniruth said, “We are very excited that the city domains are now available and to be one of the accredited registrars in Durban. Business growth has been phenomenal in Durban with many companies, including small businesses recognizing the need to have an online presence. We anticipate many local businesses requiring a city specific domain.”
In keeping with the recommended price range, the cost for the registration at Carver Media is R299. This is an annual fee that companies are required to pay to keep the domain registered. Remember that registrations are awarded on a first come first serve basis. Contact Carver Media on 0861786777 to register your domain.
