An adolescent humpback whale caused quite a stir in Durban today

The whale which died at sea, washed up at the Athlone beach, just before the Amanzimtoti Main Beach.

By midday, news of the beaching has spread on twitter and a crowd of about fifty people surrounded the whale. By 13h00 news crews and more people had arrived.

Beached whales often die due to dehydration, the body collapsing under its own weight, or drowning when high tide covers the blowhole. It is unknown what caused the young humpback whale to die.

Every year up to 2,000 animals beach themselves. Although the majority of strandings result in death, they pose no threat to any species as a whole.
