Movember Is The Month To Grow You Mustaches. Here Are The Reasons Behind The Growing Facial Hair
Many Durbanites will be sure to notice the increased growth of facial hair with guys around the city. For those wondering what is going on, it is the month of “Movember” so expect the mustaches to grow in size before the month end. Movember compunds the words – “mustache” and “November”. This annual event is held across the world to raise awareness of men’s health issues, especially prostate cancer.
In South Africa, the statistics that surround mens health is alarming. 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their life. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect men in South Africa. Also noted to affect the health of men is the staggering obesity levels in South African males. Over 40% of men in South Africa are reported to be obese.
Society pressures on men to appear strong, and “macho” resulting in men not openly discussing serious health issues that can affect them. Often warning signs of growing health issues are ignored as men feel pressured to not show signs of “weakness” by being unwell.
The Movember Foundation aims to change this way of thinking by putting a fun twist on this serious issue. Using the moustache as a catalyst, the idea is to bring about change and give men the opportunity and confidence to learn and talk about their health and take action when needed.
How Does It All Work?
Those participating in the annual event are called Mo Bros. People are encourage to financially support those creating awareness of these issues by donating money in the name of “Mo Bros” they know participating in Movember.
This year sees the introduction of the “Mo Sistas” Supporting this great cause, women are doing what they can to create awareness of Movember. Pictures have been seen of ladies using fake mustaches to improve virality of the cause. People can even throw a “Mo party” to create awareness.
