Visitors got to #LiveTheLegacy of the 50th edition of the Ballito Pro while enjoying the best flavours and fashion of bygone eras at the Ballito Pro Retro Jubilee Food & Drink presented by Ballito Junction Regional Mall on Monday, 25 and Tuesday, 26 June.

Collette Bundy, Ballito Pro event organiser, said: “The Ballito Pro Retro Jubilee Food & Drink was such a well-supported culinary event which walked guests through 50 years of this incredible beachside festival. Everyone was treated to a really high-standard of food, fashion and entertainment in an old-school carnival-style setting.”

Kids’ Cooking Competition

Monday evening was time for the youngsters to shine in the Retro Jubilee Food & Drink kids’ cooking contest organised by Fine Young Cooks’ owner, Lewaine von Allemann. Taking on the challenge were 14 budding young chefs, aged 10 to 16, who had to battle it out, in teams of two, in a mystery box challenge consisting of ground beef, onion, thyme, cheddar and egg, while dressed in era-appropriate kit.

The contestants were overseen by four judges –– who were tasked with assessing the high-quality food offerings. The judges included local restaurateur, Diogo Barendse; My Kitchen Rules’ 2017 winners, Machiel and Jamandi Bekker; as well as businesswomen, gardening guru, author and chef, Tanya Visser, who also treated the contestant to an insightful talk on herbs.

Taking home the title for 2018 was The Young Guns, consisting of Troy and Regan McDowell. They were followed closely by The Greasy Grillers – Thailen von Allemann and Bevan Dick – with The Basil Girls – Amy St.Claire-Mulley and Ella Sleathan coming in third. All prizes were sponsored by the Ballito Junction Regional Mall and Snappy Chef.

Tuesday evening started off with a fun Celebrity Cook-off with surfing legend, Shaun Tomson, and Trevor Wolf taking on Michael February and Brett Michelin. The teams had to get creative cooking a mystery box of ingredients, sponsored by La Fiamma.

Mystery Box Cooking Competition

On Tuesday the adult teams were given a chance to prove their culinary prowess in a timed cook-off. All the contestants had to cook a dish relevant to a specific decade using a mystery box collection of ingredients which included prawns, bone marrow, steak, cream and beer.

The cream of the crop in this year’s cook-off was Nomvelo Ngidi and Siphokuhle Mthembu, with Charmaine Kotze and Melanie Lintott coming in second, and father-and-daughter team, Dana and Gary Erasmus, taking third spot.

All contestants were required to come dressed in retro outfits that reflected any era from the past 50 years. Rocking out in their awesome 60s attire were the winners of the Best Dressed competition, Nadia da Paiva and Amy Harding.

Retro Carnival Fun

The smells of sizzling food whet the appetites for the tasty feasts offered by local restaurants and pop-up stalls featuring the decadence of each decade.

Visitors to this two-day retro fest were treated to garments by local fashion designers at the ‘Fashion Through the Eras’, as well as having the chance to meet the 2018 Miss Ballito with musical entertainment and a children’s carnival completing this fun-filled event.

Retro Jubilee event organiser, Lewaine Von Allemann, said: “Celebrating 50 years of surfing in South Africa, and 10 years in Ballito, the event was a resounding success and well supported by our local community. It was hosted, for the first time, at the Ballito Junction Regional Mall, and we are excited to grow this event in the coming years
