Shooting at Pavilion Shopping Centre – Are our Malls Safe?
The victims of the latest Mall shooting have been identified. Kwamashu police station Constable Zaine Sheik has been identified as the gunman in yesterday’s shooting incident at the Pavilion Shopping Centre in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal.
Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that 27-year-old Sheik had been positively identified following the shooting. Zwane also confirmed that 24-year-old Sheree Branches had been identified as the victim. Both were declared dead at the scene.
Should we step up security at Malls? I Love Durban has tried to contact both Pavilion Shopping Centre and Gateway for a comment on what measures are being taken to ensure that our malls are safer. Both Centre Management Teams were not able to comment.
Some suggestions for an increased security presence include metal detectors and scanners at entrances. However, when we posed the question to some shoppers today, some welcomed it, and others said it would be an irritation.
Westville police said the shooting had taken place in the Sissy Boy store (shop no 221) at the centre at about 12pm. Branches’ Facebook page states that she had been an employee at the Sissy Boy store.
Security needs to be stepped at our malls especially during festive seasons. What are your thoughts on this. Please share them with us.
