Tremors in Durban
Durban and surrounding residents experienced multiple earth tremors this morning with the first tremor being felt around 11am. The tremors were felt up and down the north and south coast and inland as far as Howick.
According to ER24, they tweeted that they believe that a 3.1 magnitude tremor hit Durban and surroundings.
Social media platforms were gone crazy today with reports of earth tremors reported throughout Durban and KwaZulu Natal. Many thought that the earthquake in Taiwan was the reason for the tremor, but this has not been confirmed.
We asked our community to share their experiences with us and some of them as far as Howick felt the tremors this morning.
Roger De La Harpe:
Just felt an #EarthTremor in Howick #KwaZuluNatal. Same as the one in #Durban? #DurbanEarthTremor @ILuvDBN
I was speaking to my niece in Jhb and she heard the rumble over the phone. We in Umdloti and the shaking was brief but severe. Called my sister in Umhlanga and they also experienced it. Was frightening
I felt it in Westville hospital. The building shook like a rattle. And my bed was moving from side to side. I picked my drips and was ready to run out the building and then it stopped. funny but scary
Naomi Sinqobile Nene:
Felt it in New Germany,Pinetowni thought I heard the window rattle but when I looked out there was nothing so I assumed it was a distant thunder. Then everything clicked when I logged on FB but it was very brief.
Meriska Jessica Smith:
Everyone talks about the shaking…but nobody notice that there was no birds in the sky and everything was quite. There was 3 dark spots in the sea which was gone after 15 mins. My whole house was shaking for at least 3 seconds. And then a funny noise like cracking underneath us was also there for a second or two. Its quite scary tho. It feels exactly like when you are on a boat!!! Scary!!
We are still waiting for an official statement on what the cause of the earth tremors were, but we will keep you updated as soon as we know.
