It’s time for uMlazi Mega City’s annual Mega Fun Run & Walk! So, lace up those trainers and head for the start line at King Zwelithini Stadium – Zinto Cele Fan Park, by 8am on Sunday, June 17th, 2018!

Now in its second year, this annual event incorporates the 5 km Mega Fun Walk and Run, hosted by Umlazi Mega City in conjunction with its partners, Elokishini AC and Green Legends Athletics South Africa (GLASA), it promises plenty of fun for both participants and those cheering them on.

The first 100 people to register to participate at the Mega Fun Walk and Run will receive a free t-shirt to be worn on the day of the event. There will also be refreshment stations at every 2km mark. The winners who cross the finishing line at Umlazi Mega City stand to win medals, and participate in fun activities such as aerobics.

“We are hosting this mega fun event to celebrate youth month. This allows us to not only highlight the importance of good health amongst our youth, who will be the leaders of tomorrow, but help begin the healthy development of the next generation of young people who are now about to enter our education system,” said Umlazi Mega City general manager, Siphumelele Khuzwayo.

Zakhele Gumede of Elokishini Athletic Club and the race director of the event, endorsed this. “This exciting event is aimed at the entire community which includes both younger and older members of the public, residents and, especially, local school teams. Be sure to wear your school colours and give it your best shot so you can take home a school team prize.”

In addition to promoting a healthy lifestyle, the Mega Fun Run & Walk is also the perfect way to introduce the Elokishini AC to the community around Umlazi.

The club was formed in 2016 by Sipho Mbatha, Zakhele Gumede and Lucky Mtshali, to help township athletes. With the overall objective of getting local talents race ready for some of the country’s biggest events, the Elokishini AC assists with transport for athletes, helps develop training plans and organizes long runs and group training.  Its overarching goal is to enhance the quality of life for the community through sport and inspire up and coming young sports men and women to try out other sports, including cycling and triathlons.

Those runners who have completed a minimum of 10 comrade marathons recently formed an organization called GLASA, which forms part of the organizing team. GLASA’s objective is to train young and older athletes as well as assist in setting up new running clubs through providing the expertise to organize races. Elokishini is one such running club they are supporting and providing with the same expertise.

Khuzwayo appealed to members of the public to bear with organisers and traffic authorities on the big day.

Because safety is a priority, one lane on Mangosuthu Highway will be closed to accommodate participants from 5am.
