Two of the world’s top choreographers, Amy Morgan and Betty Rox, whose credits include Beyonce, Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar, will be hosting dancehall and jazz Dance Workshops in Durban next weekend, from 2.00pm at the Durban Exhibition Centre.

The artists are being brought to Durban by Power in Dance, in association with UNITY South Africa.

“The first 90-minute workshop will be run by Betty Rox who originates from the islands of Belize and Jamaica. Known as ‘The Jamaican Dance Hall Queen,’ Betty’s style is an energetic explosion of hip hop rhythm, soul and street-cred, which will be very popular amongst our diverse Durban cultures,” commented UNITY founder and Durban choreographer, Jemma van Breda.

Betty’s dance and choreography credits include Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Jamie Foxx, Tweet, Missy, Bomba Estereo, Will Smith, Keri Hilson, Tierra Marj and more.

Due to her cultural background, she has always gravitated to artists from the Caribbean and has choreographed for Ms Triniti as the opening act for Sean Paul. Her dance crew called The Roxstarz has been collectively featured with several international Dancehall, Soca, African and Latin artists. She has also designed a clothing line called ‘Caribbean Gyrlz,’ which is worn by artists and dancers across the world.

UNITY founder, Jemma van Breda, who was selected for a USA dance scholarship three years ago by Jazz Queen, Amy Morgan, said that her dream and vision for the UNITY platform, of bringing international talent to Durban to uplift the skills of local performers, has been realized with next weekend’s staging of the first of many international UNITY workshops. UNITY is working in association with Johannesburg-based ‘Power in Dance,’ to bring the artists to Durban.

Amy Morgan trained at Broadway Dance Centre and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York in ballet, modern, jazz and hip hop. She has performed with artists such as Cher, Jessica Suter, Lloyd and Beyonce.

Amy performed with Beyonce for the Billboard Awards as well as the MTV VMA Awards. Amy teaches at the famous Millennium Dance Complex in Studio City as well as Debby Reynolds Studio and International Dance Academy in Hollywood. She specializes in heels classes, focusing heavily on proper technique as well as performance. Her style of choreography is classy, groovy and fun. Her goal is to empower the women who take her class .. and bring out that sexy confidence and the love that they have for themselves….. always reminding her students about why they love to dance in the first place.
One dancer will be selected by Amy Morgan and Betty Rox to win a “Power In Dance Scholarship for Dance Classes in Los Angeles.”

WHAT IS UNITY?

A connection – the next generation

UNITY is an organization unlike any other. It is not a studio or an academy – nor is it a company. Instead, it is a unique hub of locations where artists from across the globe can meet to share and develop their talents and ideas. On a global platform, through the use of skills transfer and video, UNITY uses the power of performance and youth development to share the art created in our space. In addition to this, UNITY puts the power of development into the hands of the artists themselves as it acts as the platform and location for all free forms, whilst employing developing artists.

UNITY strives to become a one-of-a-kind platform for the art forms of dance, music, acting, film, fitness, yoga, performing arts and all things creative operating nationally and internationally.

Through cultural upliftment and the re-energizing of the arts industry in South Africa, UNITY aims to provide artists, both young and old, with a reason to stay in South Africa.

Furthermore, all active members of UNITY automatically qualify for the chance to win bursaries and scholarships to prestigious global institutions as part of our developmental, talent exchange platform. We aim to cover all disciplines and aspects of development whilst creating a platform for exposure and employment/exchange.

Essentially, our vision is based upon three distinct pillars:

ONE

Creating employment and development for all artists through workshops, classes and project-x video creations.

TWO

Providing the basis for talent exchange and bursaries that allow our artists to grow and succeed far beyond the limitations of one style/genre.

THREE

Creating a network platform that establishes a direct connection between all artists in the South African Arts and Culture industry.
