Eston – With entry specials, trails catering for mountain bikers and runners of all abilities and a wholesome atmosphere at the Eston Farmer’s Club, the 2019 Illovo Eston Trail Challenge on Sunday 4 August is the ideal day out for any family looking for an exciting event.

The event in the sugarcane belt of KwaZulu-Natal has been a premier attraction for elite riders with the prestige and history that surrounds the race, however over the past few years organisers have also increased the focus on the family element.

With 15% off four entries for a family, the event is encouraging people to bring their children along for the day with two MTB events to choose from for the young ones, the 18km STIHL Tala Family Ride and the 10km Omnia Kids Ride, in addition to the 9km trail run.

The Tala Family Ride has become the most sought after race on the Eston MTB calendar and riders have the chance to take on the trails through the Tala Private Game Reserve. Here the riders will have the opportunity to ride near zebra, impala, wildebeest and giraffe.

If 18km is too long then the 10km Omnia Kids Ride will be a suitable alternative distance to tackle. The race takes riders around the Eston Farmers Club and is popular with the children that might need guidance from their parents who can walk alongside them with prams as has been seen in the past.

“The Eston Club gives people the perfect venue for a day in the country,” Marc Smith, chairman of the event organising committee said.

“For people from Durban or Pietermaritzburg it’s a great chance to enjoy what we have to offer and there are more than enough food stalls, coffee stalls and space to relax while members of the family takes part in one of the events.

“It’s a lovely day for everyone and we have cleared out a lot of space around the club so if you aren’t taking part in any of the races you can take a walk around the club.”

Over the years the race has put in a lot of effort to create a family orientated atmosphere at the club and Smith says it seemed like a natural progression for the event.

“Eston has always been a big race and to involve everyone that was at the club was an important aspect.

“With the addition of the trail runs we now have even more for people to do because, riding is a smaller market than runners so it made sense to include trail running,” Smith added.

The event will start with the two trail runs, the 18km race gets underway at 06:30 while the 9km trail run will start at 06:45.

The Illovo 60km Eston MTB Marathon will kick off at 08:30, followed by the 40km aQuellé Half Marathon at 09:00, the STIHL Tala Family Ride at 09:30 and the Omnia Kids Ride will begin at 10:00.
