Now we have featured many interesting travel and holiday options on our blog before, and this time we decided to do something different. We know that many of our “I Love Durban” fans were born in Durban, and have moved to Johannesburg to further their career opportunities, which means that their friends and families are regular visitors to the “City of Gold”.
We also know that one of the most popular things to do in Johannesburg is shopping and eating – they go hand in hand right? So we took advantage of the Avios and kulula partnership and headed off to Johannesburg last week in search of the best places to eat in malls and shopping centres. In this way, you can eat in some of the finest restaurants in the country and shop till you drop!
1. Licorish Bistro – Bryanston
We loved the vibe in this relaxed and friendly bistro, which is a top favourite amongst the locals. You will find that the chef isn’t afraid to experiment with different flavours and ingredients. This hip, contemporary bistro with red-leather booths specialises in African/Asian fusion cuisine. They do also cater for gluten-free if requested.
Address: Nicolway Shopping Centre, JHB, South Africa
2. Bukhara Indian Restaurant – Sandton
This elegant, ochre-accented chain restaurant with teak furniture, serves up delicious, classic Indian dishes. With stylish interiors Bukhara is a popular choice for all discerning diners in the area.
The menu is the same as its Western Province counterparts, with the addition of some new dishes as well as an award winning wine list. A must try is their breyani and their Dhal Makhani. Their coconut ice-cream is decadent too!
Address: Nelson Mandela Square, Corner Rivonia Road and 5th Street, Sandown
3. Wang Thai – Sandton
Wangthai’s recent refurbishment has created an ambience that is stylishly sizzling.
The menu offers much to tempt the palate with a profusion of dishes flavoured with lemon grass, sweet chilli and tamarind. Best enjoyed as a group affair; the Thai Suki Hot Pot sees an aromatic broth, brimming with flavourful Eastern ingredients, placed in a pot, and atop an induction stove – within the centre of the table.
Address: Shop 120 1st Floor, Nelson Mandela Square
4. The Orient – Melrose Arch
An extensive menu with a wonderful array of Asian offerings includes dim sum, sushi and Thai curries. For a real treat, sample the peking-style duck. The wine list is excellent. The ambience is modern and classy, and there’s a fabulous bar.
Address: Melrose Arch, 4 High St, Johannesburg
5. Piza E Vino, Rosebank
You will enjoy simple fresh food that is prepared in a traditional way using authentic methods with twist. Piza e Vino’s food is rigorously Italian, healthy and creative.
The Italian Stallion is one of their best pizzas and we were very impressed with the seafood pasta.
Address: Rosebank Shopping Mall, G22, Rosebank, The Zone – 2, 187 Tyrwhitt Ave, Johannesburg
6. Tasha’s – Nelson Mandela Square
The style and décor at the new Tasha’s was inspired by African Glamour and is wonderful! We loved the super atmosphere, good food and service. The menu is full of tantalizing breakfast and lunch items with a well thought out combination of flavours and presentation. A great feature is that they are open at 06h30 for an early breakfast.
Address: Shop 22, Nelson Mandela Square, Corner Maude and 5th street, Sandton
7. The Meat Co. – Melrose Arch
If you are a lover of steaks, then this is a must visit! Aside from all the classic steaks, don’t miss the pork ribs with monkey gland sauce or the fillet stuffed with sundried tomatoes, green peppercorn, mozzarella, basil and peppadew sauce.
Address: 6, Melrose Arch, High St, Johannesburg
8. EAT – Northcliff
At EAT you will find that things always change according to the seasons and the chef’s fancies. Some of their favourite and popular dishes are the honeyed, spiced and succulent chicken leg and breast with ravioli and chilli-buttered baked butternut, and a dessert of ginger fondant with goat’s cheese and caramelised apple. Exploring wines by the glass is encouraged.
Address: ‘L Corro Shopping Centre, Cnr 14th Avenue and Bagley Terrace, 2155, South Africa
9. Signature Restaurant – Sandton
If you fancy a fine dining experience then this is the place to visit. You will need to dress up for the occasion here. Diners are truly spoilt, there’s no way to sample all the highlights in one visit. A must try are the seared scallops with pork belly crisp; beef tournedos with pommes dauphine; and braised fillet and beef cheek pie.
Address: Corner of Rivonia and Outspan Road, Morningside Shopping Centre
10. The Grazing Room (Dunkeld West)
This phenomenal tapas bar turns out highlights like springbok tataki, fish pie, pulled pork steamed buns and mushroom arancini. Don’t miss the churros, they are divine!
