All Escaped Prisoners Have Been Apprehended.
The 10 Tanzanian Prisoners who escaped at King Shaka International Airport have all been apprehended. The prisoners escaped from a bus which taking them to the plane on a runway at King Shaka International Airport on Tuesday night.
The success of the swift apprehension is attributed to the team effort by various departments including King Shaka International Airport Security, SAPS, K9 unit, SAPS airwing and the Fire Department.
Captain Thulani Zwane, SAPS spokesperson confirmed today that the 10 Tanzanian prisoners who were about to be deported escaped.
“All recaptured men were detained in the police cells in terms of the Immigration Act.” said Zwane.
Head of Communications at ACSA, King Shaka International Airport, Colin Naidoo, confirmed that the SAPS K9 unit and fire department were called in to assist the search.
He also confirmed Zwane’s account of events.
“It can be confirmed that on Tuesday at 8pm at King Shaka International Airport, a group of 10 deportees escaped while being escorted by officials of Home Affairs to a private aircraft.
“The 10 people managed to overpower their guards and escape,” he said.
Naidoo said that once the SAPS and airport security had been alerted, nine of the 10 prisoners were apprehended and then placed in a holding cell at the airport police station while one escapee was still at large.
The 10th prisoner was apprehended within a few hours of the combined search.
“As with all incidents of this nature the safety and security of the airport and its users are paramount, the security teams ensured that every area of the airport precinct and out of the airport was combed to ensure the recapture of the suspect.”, said Naidoo.
